What to Look for in a Tutor: Cultivating a Love of Learning

A great tutor is an academic coach who replaces struggles and anxiety with core competencies and genuine confidence.

By focusing on the ‘how’ of learning, I equip students with the skills, knowledge and problem-solving strategies needed to take ownership of their learning and thrive independently.

Finding the right fit is essential for a student’s success.

Here is what I believe makes a truly effective tutor—and how I bring each of these to my practice:

  • Experience and Credentials - Let’s face it, tutoring is a huge investment of time, money and effort. You want a teacher who knows what they’re doing. I have a Master of Education degree and am a licensed Oregon teacher (K–12) with 25+ years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have endorsements in Reading Intervention, Language Arts, Multiple Subjects, and ESL, resulting in a broad and deep understanding of pedagogical skills and content knowledge. I am also a Certified ADHD Professional with more than 100 hours of continuing education in ADHD and Executive Functioning.

  • Personalized Approach - One size does not fit all, especially for struggling and reluctant learners. You want individualized instruction that is bespoke to the competencies and challenges of the specific learner. I assess each student’s strengths and areas for growth, then, with clear goals in focus, I design personalized tutoring sessions that cultivate skills, curiosity, and confidence. Whether it’s reading support, content tutoring, homework help, or writing instruction, lessons are individually tailored to help each student thrive.

  • Proven Strategies for Lasting Growth - Effective tutoring should not be a bandaid or patch. It should empower deep, enduring learning. By using evidence-based strategies, I build lasting understanding and independent skills.

  • Strong Communication with Families - I maintain open communication with students and parents, tracking progress, celebrating successes, and adjusting strategies as needed.

  • Patience, Empathy, and Encouragement - Deep learning does not occur when students are stressed or anxious. With patience, empathy and joy, I foster a space where students feel comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes and celebrating accomplishments.

  • Results-Oriented Tutoring - With clear goals, guidance and practice, my students strengthen academic skills, gain confidence and motivation, and develop a love of learning that will continue far beyond our sessions.
